Hi welcome to Personal Hi-Fi Audio, today we are going to review the Dawn Pro 2 Dac from Moondrop. Moondrop is widely considered one of the stronger “Chi-Fi” or Chinese High Fidelity Audio Brands, they are known for their exceptional performance and value in the IEM, dongle DAC and portable gear space. I have also done couple of reviews on MoonDrop’s IEM’s, the Chu II and Aria 2, do check them out and let me know your feedback.

Build

Let’s talk about the build of the Moondrop DAWN PRO 2 — it’s actually quite similar to the original Dawn Pro, but with a few nice refinements. The body is made from aviation-grade aluminium alloy, crafted using CNC machining and precision moulding, so it feels super solid in the hand. The design is clearly inspired by high-end desktop Hi-Fi gear.

You’ll even notice vent cutouts placed right above the heat-generating chips. That’s a smart touch because it helps keep the DAC cool and maintains stable performance during the long listening sessions.

They’ve also added some nice visual details — the brand name and model engraving on the side looks sleek and gives the whole DAC a really premium feel.

Connectors

Up top, you’ve got a USB-C port for connecting to your phone, PC, or even iOS devices. And at the bottom, Moondrop gives you dual headphone outputs, a standard 3.5mm single-ended jack and a balanced 4.4mm output, which is awesome for those who like switching between different setups.

Buttons

Here’s something practical I really liked: Moondrop included two physical volume buttons, and they even made the “volume up” button slightly larger so it’s easy to identify by touch. It’s a small thing, but it makes everyday use a lot smoother.

Another clever touch — the volume buttons double as smart controls. If you press and hold both buttons for about two seconds, you can toggle the tuning configuration directly from the device. When tuning mode is active, a small orange light comes on, and when it’s off, you’ll see a red light instead. It’s a really handy feature, especially if you’re switching between setups often. And just so you know, once you disconnect the DAC, the tuning mode automatically resets to off by default, which helps avoid any accidental changes the next time you’re plugging it in.

Chipset

When it comes to audio gear like DACs, clean power makes all the difference — any power noise can directly affect your sound quality. That’s where the Moondrop DAWN PRO 2 really shines. It uses dual Cirrus Logic CS43198 DAC chips, powered by three independent Low Dropout Regulators and an independent crystal oscillator to keep the signal ultra-stable and distortion-free.

Sound

The Dawn Pro 2 can easily drive most headphones without breaking a sweat, all while preserving the delicate nuances of your music’s timbre. It delivers an impressive dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio, with incredibly low total harmonic distortion that keeps background noise to a minimum. Whether you’re using it with headphones or as a line-out, you get an immersive, clean listening experience every time.

EQ Options

The Moondrop DAWN PRO 2 comes with a second-generation online interactive DSP, powered by the updated Moondrop app. It gives you a professional-grade tuning interface that’s both precise and easy to use, so you can really tailor the sound to your liking. You can tweak everything from filter type and frequency points to gain and Q value, giving you full control over the audio.

The Moondrop Dawn Pro 2 has a community feature, and this makes this DAC really cool and takes it to a different level. Let’s just say that you spent some time tweaking your sound just the way you like it, you can actually upload that and share it with others, similarly you can also explore some of the presets made by other users or there might also be some professionals who have uploaded their preset. Overall, it feels like Moondrop is turning tuning into a collaborative hobby, not just a technical feature.

You already own a Dawn Pro — is the Dawn Pro 2 worth upgrading?

If you’re deeply into portable HiFi, own higher‑end headphones/IEMs, or want maximum flexibility — that is DSP tuning, community presets, flagship DAC chips, etc. — then yes, the Dawn Pro 2 offers real upgrades.

If you’re already satisfied with the original Dawn Pro, you like the sound, you don’t need an extensive DSP tuning, and your headphones aren’t ultra demanding, then the upgrades might be nice to have rather than essential.

If you don’t own the Dawn Pro and you are on the look-out for a good DAC under $70, and you want excellent value, great features, and future‑proofing (balanced output, strong specifications, tuning options, etc.), then the Moondrop Dawn Pro 2 is one of the best choices in its price range.
